I'm trying to get a handle on insurance costs. Am I to understand that if a pilot only has a pilot permit - ultra-light-aeroplane, he/she cannot get hull insurance, only third party liability? I am probably wrong, just want some feedback on the subject and costs.

Hi Colin. You can get hull insurance if that hull insurance is 'all risks - ground' (not in motion). I am insured through Marsh, and the annual premium for that is 1.4% of the value of the aircraft. I don't think you could get 'in motion' or flight hull coverage.

Matthew. Just wondering which company you get your insurance through, and also does it make a difference how many hours flying time (third party insurance)you have?

My insurance is through Marsh Canada, COPA's silver wings plan. Hours flight time makes no difference in the premiums.

UPAC's insurance broker Park Aviation Insurance has hull insurance for ultralights, both 'in motion' and 'on ground.' My understanding is that flight hours do not count for 'on ground'; they do for 'in motion.' Each plane is different, but I've been told the rates are very competetive with other insurers.

As for having other licenses, including foreign licenses, you'd have to ask to see if it makes a difference.

Park Insurance also has commercial insurance for UL flight schools. COPA's insurance is for private use only. Even if a student has coverage, the training flight is not covered if the instructor owns the training plane.

It can't hurt to give Park a call while you're comparing prices and coverages. Call 1-888-917-1177.
