Purchasing a Used Ultralight, Posted 05-10-2006, 10:53 PM #1
Hi:

I am in the market for a used Ultralight (AULA) and I have found a Chinook I am interested in but I need some advice. I have spoken to ASAP and the current owner and the A/C can remain an AULA but it requires a new engine and weight and balance before I it can be registered by me.

Most if not all of the the mounts and cables, hoses, etc. are still on the body and I would like to put a Rotax 582 on the A/C. I have never mounted an engine so I am really getting into unknown territory.

What I need to know is what type of resources are available in and around the Kitchener/Waterloo, Guelph, Cambridge (South Western Ontario) for someone like myself? I am not looking for free help (although it would be nice) but I would like to know who is out there with some experience and who do you go to for help?

Any information any can offer me would be greatly appreciated.

If anyone has any reason why I should or should not consider a Chinook please let me know as well.

Thanks

Steve Robinson

So the engine previously was a 582? If that is the case it won't be difficult, even if you have never done it before. Probably the toughest part would be deciding where all the cables, hoses etc. go, and if they are already there, it is just a matter of bolting the engine to the mounts and hooking everything up. You should be able to find an installation manual for this engine/plane, maybe from ASAP? Another thing to consider, you might find a flying Chinook for less money than what you would pay for an engineless one, + an engine.

Who could inspect the plane to be purchased?, Posted 07-06-2006, 10:44 PM #3
Hello,

I am seriously considering purchasing a used ultralight (Evektor Sportstar). I would like to ask someone (not for free) to help me check out the aircraft before I make the commitment. Could UPAC help in an impartial technical inspection?

Thanks,

Gabor

For Steve RE: Chinook, Posted 07-07-2006, 09:50 AM #4
Hi Steve,

Welcome to the forum! Always great to have new members to share ideas and thoughts.

I do assume you have at least already taken a couple flights in a Chinook - correct? If not, they of course you need to do that before you even think about buying one (or any other aircraft type).

If you don't already know him, Collin King is a local UL Instructor and owns a Chinook. He lives in Guelph and keeps his plane nearby just outside of Fergus. I went for a flight with him a couple years back and thought the plane was pretty good. He has a 503 on his though.

Contact Collin at 519-546-3620 or email lift-off@rogers.com if you want to talk to him. He would know quite a bit about the Chinook and could advise you on what to look for in the used one you are considering.

Duke Aviation out of Peterborough would also be a good contact for feedback on the aircraft and with engine installagion 905-797-9652 mark@dukeaviation.ca

Question - was there no engine on the plane you are looking for in the first place? Or did the previous owner have an engine not authorized by ASAP? ASAP should be able to provide all the information you need about instaling the 582 on the Chinook. It is one of the engines they offfer with their kits, so you would think they must have instructions on how to install the engine and hook everything up.

Best of luck with your Chinook and happy flying!
