Rotax reliability and safety, Posted 07-22-2009, 05:25 PM #1
First post,

I have recently started training and am very excited. The aircraft I am learning to fly has the 912 and I am very comforted about the reliability of the 4 stroke from everything I have seen and read.

My question relates to the 2 stroke Rotax engines. When the company itself acknowledges that the 503 and 582 are subject to sudden stoppage...at the worst moment for an engine failure on climbout, how can I feel safe when I have read notices like this from the manufacturer?

"This engine, by its design, is subject to sudden stoppage. Engine stoppage can result in crash landings, forced landings or no power landings. Such crash landings can lead to serious bodily injury or death"[1]

I realize that the company must keep their proverbial butts covered but really.
I would be interested to hear anyone's thoughts, stories on the safety of these engines. Thank you.

Regards,
Mark

Any engine can have sudden stoppage.

503 and 582 are both decent engines and most will go well past the TBO of 300 hours I find. MY last 582 was still going stron g at 550 hours.

I got Kitfox in here now that made it to 430 hours and the ring gear flew apart. I am swapping engines in it this week.

I have a freshly rebuilt 503 here with Electric start exhaust EGT CHT gauges as well and tiny tach, carbs -- ready to go install and you can see it run. First 3000$ takes it .
